EDITING PROCESS
The editing process is always the most lengthy but most fun part of the whole production for me, but finding where to start is almost impossible.
In the end, I made the choice to make something basic just something short that would introduce the documentary & that would include the interviews, this gave me a starting point and it gave me the start to edit down my interviews to simple answers.
I started of the film originally with a shot I took at my first clients house, it was a shot of a radio but the song fitted perfect with the feel & mood of the documentary, that I included this song and carried it on throughout the editing production.
FIRST COPY/EDIT
I rendered a copy of this first edit here, the ending of this section was to include the second intro, as you can see opener to the documentary, intro with text, and a interview but I needed that more personal in-look, that would make it more of a documentary feel.
I next wanted to further produce the documentary & build upon it, because it didn't 100% feel like one, I further wanted to include myself so involving a voice over. I made a script & recorded a brief voice over. The chances where I'd film more at a later stage, I applied these to the edit, creating simple text on screen, to where I wanted to later replace these with footage.
I next realized I needed to add a break between the interviews it felt to fast to switch between one to another and so I wanted to include some sort of voice over between that to not only add information but to make the documentary more interesting as a whole and give that needed split between the footage
OPENING & ENDING
The start & the ending was something I struggled on, I knew I wanted to start/end it with a voice over but the footage I didn't have a clue, I had idea's to originally have some sort of car/city sequence on what would be introducing the audience on my journey to the first client but as with experimenting this, it just didn't work nor did it really make any sense.
In the end I decided to keep it as text but added a short thumbnail at the start, I did this because it gave it a better opener than just text & it also introduced myself with the title ''Owen Nutkins Productions''. I then moved it onto introducing the first client with a more documentary look to it, using footage I filmed on the day.
The film then goes through both interviews and then ends off with explaning what I learnt from the visit and what I learnt from meeting them, I then added a simple fact at the end because I felt a documentary like this deserved some area that would provide that little more information to audience, I then leave it with linking to a website, where the audience could find out more about both clients and their stories.
MUSIC
Music was something I struggled on, from the original edit I had, I had the soundtrack that was played on the first shot of the radio but during editing and adding more of a introduction to the documentary, the soundtrack didn't work anymore, so I had to find something that would work throughout, I spent over a hour searching and testing different music, I also needed something that could contrast from the intro to the interviews & so when working with the music, I'd get something that worked for the introduction but then a second song that wouldn't contrast well when moving to the interviews.
I finally came down to 2 tracks, the opening/ending song and the song that would be played throughout the interviews. They both gave this inspiring move & feel to the documentary but allowed the interviewees to tell their story and applied the focus at them rather than the music taking that in look away.
